SUMMARY

Unrestored and unmolested, just remarkably, delightfully standard.

DESCRIPTION

  • UK-supplied, right-hand drive, 'CP' 150bhp example first registered on 28/05/1970
  • Superbly finished in Damson over Tan Ambla with a black hood and complete with its original steel hardtop, also in Damson. A striking combination
  • Optioned from new with overdrive, a heater, disc wheels and 165 x 15 Dunlop Sports
  • 75,300 miles supported by a full MOT history and the service records with supporting invoices
  • Packed History File containing Bills of Sale, Original Guarantee, Original Handbook, stamped Service Schedules, V5s, virtually every MOT Certificate, Valuations and Assessments, old tax discs, details of trips abroad, general correspondence, its BMI Heritage Certificate and a plethora of invoices
  • The car's three long term owners (latest from 1993 to 2021) appear to have all been fastidious when it came to keeping records and the invoices in the file (over 100) relate to servicing, repairs and maintenance over 50 years. They do not relate to restoration or upgrading as it's important to remember that NXC 97H has simply been lovingly preserved
  • The TR's current custodian has a deserved reputation for setting up complex engines (Aston Martin, Alfa and Maserati) and is well versed in the TR6's little ways when it comes to fuelling. After a recent road test, a knowledgeable Triumph aficionado claimed "I have never driven a better set up TR6"
  • The TR benefits from new, correct-material, seat covers, door cards and carpets and will be carefully detailed and freshly MOT'd for the sale.

According to its BMI Heritage Certificate, # CP/51597 was built on May 7th, 1970 finished in Damson with a 'New Tan (Ambla)' interior, fitted with a Black hood and optioned with Disc Wheels, Overdrive, a Heater and 165 x 15 Dunlop Tyres. It was despatched from the factory to dealers Archers of Shirley on the 19th and first registered (NXC 97H) on the 28th of May.

A couple of years later, in May 1972 the TR was acquired by John Ruffell with 16,283 miles showing. He paid £1,325 for the car and the Purchase Invoice from Lex Mead, Cheltenham is in the file. John was the first of the car's three long-term owners and he was followed by Marion Stainton who bought it from John on 24/03/1989 and subsequently sold it to Peter Dodd of Winchester on 17/12/1993 with an indicated mileage of 60,028. Peter reluctantly sold it a few months ago to our vendor at around 75,000 miles. A little unusually, all of these owners appear to have been diligent when it comes to keeping records and the history file is packed with dozens and dozens of invoices for service and maintenance over the last 49 years. The file also contains Bills of Sale, Original Guarantee, Original Handbook, stamped Service Schedules, V5s, virtually every MOT Certificate, Valuations and Assessments, old tax discs, details of trips abroad, general correspondence and the Heritage Certificate.

The Triumph appears to have been regularly serviced throughout its life;

  3-07-70        974 miles

14-04-71   8,025

17-04-72  16,274

27-09-72  17,138

29-05-73  22,206

17-12-75  30,306

24-05-78  36,164

07-08-80  42,000

12-04-89  47,914

14-03-91  52,492

28-02-92  57,838

All of the above are detailed on invoices in the file along with some is correspondence from Lex Mead regarding a new crankshaft and bearings fitted under warranty on 27-09-72. In may 1984 there is an invoice for some paint rectification from Valley Garage in Stroud.

In Peter Dodd's ownership from late '93 through to 2021, it would appear to have been thoroughly indulged with dozens of invoices from Michael Rogers Garage including over a dozen service visits over the 28 year period even though the car's mileage was only just over 15,000 in the same time frame. It benefitted from a new Tonneau in April '94, a new clutch in May '96 and was treated to a Waxoyl treatment in February 1992 and again in 2018.

Our vendor runs an Aston Martin restoration business and is particularly good at setting-up complicated multi-cylinder engines. He had been looking for a TR6 for a while but wasn't interested in anything with upgraded engines, blinged-up interiors, big wheels etc. and wanted a car that was honest and never been modified or molested in any way. NXC fitted the bill and the huge history file helped. Anyone who has ever owned or worked on original TR6s knows that fuelling was an issue from day one and getting them to run on six-cylinders was a bit of a 'black art'.  However, after many happy hours and the addition of a discreetly mounted Bosch-style fuel pump, the car runs 'as sweet as a nut' as they say. Knowledgeable attention to steering geometry, brakes and the suspension has resulted in the car driving as nicely as it runs.  After a recent road test, a knowledgeable Triumph aficionado claimed "I have never driven a better set up TR6".

The car presents beautifully in gleaming Damson with its matching hardtop and smart Tan interior and looks amazingly 'standard', which is the whole idea. With over four decades of demonstrably caring ownership, this is a very special TR6 and we welcome and encourage your close inspection.
