Launched in 1966 as a two-door version of the Silver Shadow, the coachbuilt Mulliner Park Ward Coupe was a superior car to the saloon on which it was based. With fabulously elegant coachwork designed by Bill Allen, each and every one was handbuilt by MPW in a necessarily lengthy process that took all of 20 weeks and resulted in a price some 50% higher than the standard Silver Shadow.
Only the very finest materials were used with different seats and dash to the Shadow, engine power went up by 10% and tweaks to the suspension and steering geometry gave an even better ride. Demand for these magnificent cars was so great that the waiting list was measured in years, not months, a state of affairs that resulted in them being given their own model name, Corniche, in March 1971.
The Corniche was progressively developed over time, gaining features like split-level air conditioning, rack-and-pinion steering, Bosch fuel-injection and self-levelling rear suspension. Reassuringly exclusive, only 1,108 Coupes were made before production ceased at the end of 1981, though a convertible version continued as the flagship model in the Rolls-Royce range until 1996.
Finished in Burgundy, this example appears straight with a good depth of finish. Attractive Corniche interior is slightly scruffy and the Ox Blood leather is well-patinated and could do with a leather feed. 77,632 miles are indicated however there is no paperwork with the car so this cannot be corroborated, however, whilst researching the car we came across an advert from 2012 when it was offered for sale for £12,500. The mileage at that point was stated as 77,568 just 64 miles less than is indicated now. In the advert, it was stated that the car was fitted with "Air Conditioning, Leather Seats, Power-assisted Steering (PAS), Power Locks, Power Seats, Power Windows" and it was described as having three previous owners and having "Been in the family for 16 years". The advert also states that "Lots of service history and paperwork for maintenance over the years. Runs and drives as it should, an absolute pleasure. The gearbox is very smooth and the engine is in excellent condition, starts first time with no smoke or rattles.". Now we appreciate that this is a dealer advert from 8 years ago and we are not suggesting that any of these are 'Matters of Fact' but we suspect that anyone interested in buying this elegant old Corniche will have sufficient about them to form their own opinion.
It's believed to run and turns over freely but will need a battery and fresh fuel. Great basis for a refresh or just use as is.
